Zipline: medical drones for delivery

“We’ve designed Zipline to solve the second half of this problem. We know who needs medicine, when and where. And now, we can get them that medicine as quickly as possible”

Zipline [1]

Zipline operates the world’s only drone delivery system at national scale to send urgent medicines, such as blood and vaccines, to those in need – no matter where they live [2]. Drones have been used for delivery to ensure access to to life-saving medicines to the remote regions on Rwanda,  with an average of half an hour delivery time [3]. The Guardian also reported that the use of drones helped in reducing maternal deaths – a quarter of which are the result of blood loss during childbirth.

It functions through 5 simple steps [2] :

  1. Order by text message
  2. Packed in minutes
  3. Launch
  4. Direct delivery
  5. Recovery
